Each year, about a thousand tornadoes touch down in the United States, far more than any other country.
Our stores were located in the path of tornado alley. There became an opportunity to help the citizens of our towns. We teamed up with a weather radio company and local meteorologist from a local TV station (Most of the meteorologist were considered local celebrities.). Our stores would hold a event in which we would program customers weather radios (of course we sold them too). The local meteorologists would promote the event on their weather broadcast, and also come to meet the customers. They would help the store personnel and the weather radio company program the radios.
The severe weather radio remotes were big events that we tie into with a television station. Their meteorologist would bring in hundreds of people to the store. Sometimes, the station would even have a live cut-in during the news. Besides programming a lot of radios, the stores would also sell anywhere from 100 to 300 radios per event.
